the anatomy of an hana
i guess i should introduce myself as the author of this site.... i guess... my name is hana (they/it/any) and i'm a queer/demipan biology graduate who loves phychemistry, plant development, and ecology!
favorites
book: flowers for algernon
i love crying over sad literature that changes perceptions about people i generally positive directions and flowers for algernon does exactly that. whether it's the full text or the truncated, digestable version, both are heart breaking and world changing. i would recommend this as an essential piece of literature for anyone anywhere.
cat: calico
despite it all, my fursona is a bunny
fern: adiantum jordanii (california maidenhair fern)
with pentagramma triangularis coming is as a close second with the loose spores, i am in love with the aesthetic structure of this ridiculously insatiably thirsty plant that is abundant in most california wet forests, especially between winter and spring.
flower: peony
i generally dislike ornamentals because what the hell do you mean we are cultivating invasive plants because they're beautiful? pretty privilege is so real, but this is also an excellent example of micheal pollan's talk about plants' grasp on humans.
genre (music): progressive rock
the child of math rock and experimental, progressive rock knows how to scratch my brain with weird sounds that help me visualize how i see pretty much anything and everything. if i could compose, i would love to join the likes of strawberry girls, invalids, catbamboo, nyu., monobody, floral...
language: dansk
i peaked in lingual interest in highschool speaking six languages simultaneously. i can still sort of speak (from most to least proficient): french, english, vietnamese, danish, asl, and japanese. i would like to learn esperanto german, latin, malaysian, spanish, and korean. most of these languages i have learnt for one person or another. of course i was excited when visiting solvang, known as california's own "little denmark."
lichen: chrysothrix candelaris (gold dust lichen)
leprose lichen have the coolest thallus formation THERE I SAID IT. of course i also love the entire chrysothrix genus for confusing the hell out of lichenologists around the world
mascot: cinnamoroll
i remember reading cinnamon's manga series early in my childhood library where i learnt how to use a computer and forget time and time again to bring my library card. my favorite chapter was the one where he was unable to stop hiccoughing (or was it sneezing?). in any case, this guy has these ridiculously huge white ears that apparently come from him being borne of the gods of the sky in the cinnamoverse. cinnamoroll lives with his freaky cast of dog familia, including baby milk, mocha, chiffon, and maybe one or two other siblings that i do not care to remember as i write this rash description hastily in my university library. i've been collecting marchandise since august 2022.
mineral: serpentinite
i am exposing myself (even more) as a california naturalist with this one. it is so interesting to look at serpentine land formation and phytoremediation. asbestos beloved.
noble gas: xenon
argon close second
season: winter
soup and cuddling
subject: chemistry
as much as i adore biology, i think chemistry is so much cooler. i wish i understood more of it better :(
tea: jasmine
my go-to order for milk tea is jasmine tea topped off with a salty foam of some sort, sometimes with cheese. chrysanthemum is a close second. i am somewhat addicted to honey chrysanthemum tea, like the ones sold in carton packs of six in most grocery stores.
