Hana (japanese: 花, Hana; born 29 May 2003) is a biology major, ecologist, botanist, queer activist, cosplayer, and artist. They attend local events when they can and enjoy finding restorative projects to think about.

Raised as a Bay Area citizen, Hana studied Biology at Santa Clara University and graduated June of 2025. At this institution, Hana made their way around the biology, biochemistry & chemistry, and physics departments by working under Matthew Meyerhof as assistant to the lab associate where the two managed labs across the aforementioned departments. Hana was known in high school to be rather recluse and otherwise neurotic, having been known to win a few mathematic achievement awards and participate in several hobbyist clubs.

Greenhouse is Hana's ongoing project, a story and aspiring comic about queer segregation and the perils of allophobic eugenicism that was first conceived in middle school. While it is certainly not renowned as a standalone piece, their beloved character Cheryl Clausen has made small waves among willingly listening fans (famously known as Drain and Zach).

Early Life

Hana was born in UCI Health, a hospital located in the predominantly Vietnamese city of Fountain Valley in Southern California. Their mother was from Vietnam and father from China, which explains why they were born in Southern California. Their deadname was chosen by their father's childhood best friend which Hana has since abandoned due to this individual's history of what can only be described as horrendous activities. Hana's ethnic breakdown is 50% Vietnamese, 25% Chinese, and 25% Japanese.

Hana was raised with three brothers: Anthony (5 years their senior), Tyler (4 years their junior) and Bryant (6 years their junior).

Fun Fact: Anthony's surname is different from Hana's since he was born from their mom's first love back in Vietnam.

They were raised as Vietnamese Catholics, which Hana abandoned quite early on in their life after discovering Tumblr and the LGBT community in middle school.

Hana today is the result of years of Learning Star and community homeschool starting from the age of three before they cared enough about the world. Their only memory of preschool, at age 4, was the teacher being so sick that she decided to write her name on the board in fancy script, which involved drawing big dots at the end of letters where serifs might be.

Elementary school at Vinci Park was just as unremarkable, the only recollection being on fire training drills and the alma mater which was shockingly elegant and classy for an elementary school. Sometimes, to this day, Hana likes to take morning strolls towards Vinci Park to see the renovations and to feel like they deserved a better playground growing up, which was only first reconstructed after their elementary school graduation. Mrs. Kirby was also their mother's favorite teacher because despite being strict, Hana managed to become student of the month several times over, likely due to something undiagnosed at the time.

For their final two years of elementary school, Hana's mother decided it would be the perfect time to transfer them out of Vinci Park and into Anthony Spangler, which would be closer to where Anthony was attending Milpitas High School. Hana's three memories of Spangler were being called fat by an upper classman that they had a crush on (but was in a more advanced class than), being bullied by some female friends for interacting with a male crush of their, and breaking their arm on the playground.

Middle School (2013-2017)

Hana attended a total of three different middle schools, as growing up, their mother decided it would be uncouth to live in any one place for too long of a time. Despite coming straight out of Anthony Spangler Elementary, located in Milpitas, Hana's parents decided to transfer Hana and their younger siblings to Saint John Vianney (SJV), a Catholic school that taught from the kindergarten grade through eigth in East Side San Jose. Luckily for their younger siblings, assimilating into the buddy system would be easy as they would be on the "learning" side of the partnership and not the "teaching" side. In any case, coming into this school for the fifth grade was grounds to being slowed.

On their first day of school, Hana was assigned to another fellow Asian AFAB who would end up pointing out that they were two of the five East Asian students in the entire grade, maybe even school. Hana was promptly seated at a curb, which was apparently deemed lovingly a "curb party" every break and lunch.

Eventually, Hana gets around to knowing their classmates and finds themselves regularly interacting with a small six man group the most, coining group names such as "Shrigma Men of the City" and "Coochie Gang". Five of the six are musically inclined, with one person particularly interested in pursuing music school. Three of them are members of the SJV choir.

As is custom with any small school (~60 students to an entire grade, ~500 students to the whole school), everyone knew each other by name. This meant that everyone knew everyone's business, regardless of how close students actually were. From this erupted the class wide game of family that would eventually wed Hana and Rhyan, another fellow transfer student who had arrived no more than a week before Hana and who was briefly known as the student who wore both skirt and pants on his first day. Obviously as the game of family was no more than a game, Rhyan and Hana were not actually dating. On the night of a fateful quincenera, another one of Hana's friends had confessed feelings after the two had discussed how beautiful the stars were because middle school children can only get so philosophical. This led to a little kerfuffle and unserious tension between the three.

None of the romance drama registers to Hana because it turns out they have had a long time crush on an upper classman: Ian. They make absolutely no stride to actually interact with the guy and only know him as the guy who is always walking in the upperclassmens' walking lane alongside his friend Ryan.

For a very brief two weeks at the start of maybe the seventh grade, Hana's mom get bored and wants to feel something. She ends up enrolling Hana et al (Hana and their siblings) at Saint John the Baptist school in Milpitas because she thinks the community is more Asian, which would align with her own Asian beliefs. Hana et al. were repidly returned to their original school because Hana kept complaining that they knew nothing of the new kids and missed their old friends. The only thing these new kids would do was talk about some song that mentioned something about something being a week ago. Upon returning to SJV, Hana was shocked to be greeted by their friend Zach, forgetting what he looked like, who went in for a very lovely embrace.

Mrs. Garman catches me during the graduation because I go flying down the stairs.

High School (2017-2021)

Hana's mother initially wanted to keep her children within private schools, having seen what good SJV seemed to do for her children. Initially, Hana was set to attend either Notre Dame or some other all-girls school, proving that their mother did not actually believe her child was queer. However, after learning about the egregious financial costs of attendance (as well as listening to Hana explain how much they would hate the "flipped classroom" teaching style), Hana's mother decided to settle on a public school instead.

Distance from home was a major factor for Hana's mother when considering which high school to send them off to, but the school district the household was assigned to, Independence High School, did not appeal to the authoritarian that lived in Hana's mother's heart. This was due to the East Side Union High School District gossip regarding the high rates of youth misdemeanors that circled Independence, also known as "Indie". Instead, Hana's mom opted for the second closest school, Piedmont Hills High School (PHHS), which Hana was exactly one neighborhood away from being able to attend. This did not stop Hana's mom, as she had many local connections being the prestigious Vietnamese Catholic socialite that she was; it was not so hard to borrow home addresses nowadays.

The application process for being admitted into a child's first high school classes was nothing short of boring and unadvanced. After filling out a one page form on their desired classes, with the only real choices being in math and reading levels (and if lucky, the recommendation of a previous teacher). These decisions did not really matter anyways because all high school students would be promptly subjected to Aleks math testing and whatever comprehension test the english teacher wished to bestow onto their students. Hana landed in pre-calculus and the "advanced" writing classes as a result of these exams.

For Hana's very first day of high school, their parents decided it would be best to walk their child into their classroom, all the way up to the front and entered most seat of their first class ever. Of course, nobody else's parents did the same, which their parents bragged about. It was on the first day of school that Hana learned they shared a class with someone who also attended SJV:

Piedmont Hills High School. The Erik encounter. COVID 19 hitting junior year rendering high school nothing more than a fever dream. Memento mori. Meeting lifelong friends Simran and Alex. The Group Incident. The Among Us polycule. Ryan, Sunny and Merlin and Icarus.

Personal Life

Autism, BPD, and Bipolar

God obviously hates Hana if gthey decided to inflict hthem with this discordant onslaught of mental plagues. Doubling down by also making them AFAB in an asian household was God's biggest punishment to humanity. It's one thing to be autistic and typically unaware of others' needs, but ostensibly even more insensitive to have the same person who was overly cautious about someone's enjoyment of the car climate suddenly unaware that anyone would care about getting spoken over time and time again. Coupled with mental illnesses that convince its owners that they never do enough for anyone and that the whole world could leave them at any given time, Hana has an extremely difficult time maintaining ordinary relationships.

Culinary Interest

Growing up in a predominantly Vietnamese household meant growing up learning Vietnamese food preparation. Soy sauce, chicken bouillon, star anise, lemongrass, ginger, and garlic were pantry staples. The refridgerator always had tofu and scallions. While their father loved manning the grill (as any father does), Hana's mother was a soup enthusiast who left a brazier of stock on the stove at least once a week. By the age of eight, Hana was made familiar with the ins and outs of their kitchen and made it a point to sit around whoever was cooking on any given day, offering to help where they could. They first learnt about washing and prepping produce, then figured out measuring (about as much as a Vietnamese mother does), moved onto trimming and cutting aforementioned produced, and eventually frying their first egg. Instant noodles came soon after.

San Jose is nonspecifically a mixing pot of ethnicities with a notable mass of Hispanic folk reflected in local cuisine, especially Mexican food, which was the next biggest cuisine Hana somewhat learned about. Shamefully, they began at Taco Bell, like any other American gastronomy rookie. Tortillas, protein, a bed of lettuce, and some cheese having infinite permutations in addition to cream cheese was generational. As they quickly burnt out on eating out, Hana moved on to, alongside their younger brother Tai, learn how to make something similar if not better at home. In the middle of 2015, Hana found them and their brother gathering the same groceries of tortillas, tomatoes, avocados, ground beef, shredded cheese, and cream cheese once a week, eating the same thing every day for those weeks. The cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, and cayenne were a one time purchase.

After a lifetime of tacos, quesadillas, tacos, and more tacos finally got old, Hana decided to move onto something that might have felt lighter: some fish and a bowl of miso soup. Japanese food wasn't so unfamiliar to Hana, as they were raised on it, but it wasn't until after taking on two other cuisines that they considered trying to assemble a pretty looking plate of fish at home for themselves. It wasn't so hard, really: Japanese cooking helped Hana hone in their knife skills, cutting soft filets of fish and firm pepo of cucumbers. Hana also, at this time, experimented with mixing condiments to spice up their dressing game. Their long-time standing favorite is a mixture of Buldak's hot sauce and Kewpie mayonnaise.

Hana technically began assembling "Italian" dishes at the ripe age of approximately ten years of age, which involved boiling dry pasta and adding a jar of Prego. No shame to anyone who still prepares pasta that way as it is delicious and reliable, but Hana began making sauce from scratch and spicing it a few years after, in the big 2018. This sauce revelation expanded over the course of the COVID-19 quarantining, where they tried adding cream to red sauce to make a marinara sauce. At some point, they took an online culinary class where they covered the mother sauces, which prompted them to attempt a roux-birthed alfredo sauce.

Having properly fucked with Japanese food, Hana uncovered curry, which inevitably brought Hana around to try Indian curry.

Queer Identity

Being raised by a Vietnamese Catholic Immigrant Mother made being happy a little difficult for Hana. It was not until Zach had introduced Hana to a website that was a familiarly obnoxious blue (Tumblr) that they discovered that two men sharing a tender kiss was alright, not that they ever though it was weird in the first place. This enlighenment made itself known to their mom and Hana found themselves trying to talk to everyone but her about their newfangled interest in identity and orientation. freedom in highschool gsa, finding queer friends and spaces online, cosplay community, pride in college, hospitalization, pride parades

Amino AcidHistidineAmino acids are essential to the construction of proteins, which are essential to growth, repair, and other bodily functions. Unsurprisingly, consuming proteins often leads to consuming essential amino acids! Proteins that contain histidine include most animal meats, eggs, and legumes. Histidine is specifically a precursor to histamine which is a neurotransmitter that helps mediate allergies. Histidine sometimes engages in a little dance called a proton shuffle where the nitrogen helps to create a positive charge imbalance that can help to quickly reset an enzyme.
AuthorKurt VonnegutVonnegut is a rather dark and satirical writer, so it's a bit ironic that his writing was the one to get Hana out of a deep depression that lasted years and looked like an unorganized and unsanitary hoarder that knew nothing of health or decency. It was in his book A Man Without a Country where Vonnegut wrote something that reignited Hana's joy and passion for doing anything at all:
“[...] go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possible can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”
Hana had discovered this on a fateful Tumblr-scrolling day, which forever changed the course of how they proceed every day. If you knew Hana from 2017-2021, they have likely sent you this and/or posted it somewhere.
CatCalicoDisregarding cat breeds, calico refers to the coat coloration of a cat, often three toned: white, orange, and grey. They are more likely to occur in female cats due to activation in the X chromosome; in the case of a male calico, the calico coat would be an indication od Klinefelter syndrome. Hana likes calico cats simply because they are colorful; Hana is currently (Aug 2025) matching with Adrian's one calico, Pocky.
ChipHoney Butter ChipOriginally a South Korean snack manufactured by Haitai Calbee, honey butter chips made their way over to Japan under the rebranding of "Happiness Butter Potato Chips". Honey Butter Chips made their way into plenty of popular media, including Tumblr-hit otome game Mystic Messenger. This snack is seen to be readily consumed by one of the romanticizable characters, 707, who is shown once flaunting duck lips with a couple of arched oblong chips.
ColorGreenNaturally occuring most predominantly as a result of chlorophyll, it is fitting that this color is known-botanist Hana's favorite color, including barfy chartreuse, but especially deep forest greens. Let it be known that unless specified as "plant green", blue and green are the same color. Japan also conflates blue and green--pay attention to their traffic lights!
Cookie FlavorRed VelvetDespite knowing that the red in velvet does not drastically change the taste of the cocoa powder, something about having a decadent red treat with white spots of pure sugar does something for Hana. Their favorite red velvet cookies came from Safeway until they were discontinued sometime in the early 20s.
CuisineKoreanThis was a hard toss up between several Asian cuisines, all of which were odes to Hana's upbringing. However, after arduous and careful consideration, Korean food won on all important fronts of food forms: noodles (japchae), soup (jjigae), seasoning (sesame oil heavy), flavor profile (excellent balance of sweet, umami, and spicy), and naturally very spicy. Hana adores the idea of a banchan and would love if every meal ever came with one.
DessertTiramisuThis surprisingly simple three-part assemblance of lady fingers, coffee, and mascarpone supposedly comes from Italy and can be recreated in ones kitchen in as little as an hour. Hana has made tiramisu more times than they have fingers to count. They suggest baking the lady fingers as a lady palm or torso instead: as a sheet rather than logs.
DrinkJasmine Sea Foam CreamRegardless of cafe location, the jasmine sea foam cream combination is an infallible one and unlikely to be unpallatable. Obviously, the fat in the cream neutralizes the bitter tannins in the tea, drawing out the gentle floral notes of the jasmine in a velvety smooth sip. Sweet and salty flavors are added to accent and dance in the mouth, creating the ultimate mouth experience. Bonus points if the location tops the drink with some sort of powder, which is usually matcha.
FernAdiantum jordanii (California Maidenhair Fern)Ferns are vascular plants that reproduce with spores instead of flowers or seeds. The California Maidenhair is native to California (go figure). Its scalloped fan-shaped leaves are described to emerge in a fountainlike manner. They enjoy growing in moist shaded areas, often found on cliffs in shaded forests.
FlavorStrawberryNothing beats the bright refreshing taste of the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity of this vibrant fruit. With a gloriousy intricate cross sectional pattern, the strawberry also boasts an incredibly elegant and delicate profile. Whether topping a fruit cake or sliced for drinks, the appearance and flavor of a fresh strawberry is premierly exceptional.
FishYellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) Certainly no hobbyist fisher, Hana enjoys the culinary value of consuming fish, especially raw in dishes like chirashi. Their favorite fish to have come from yellowfin tuna, sometimes advertised as Ahi, because of the mouthfeel and taste.
FlowerPeonyAlthough not typically a fan of ornamentals, the humble bisexual peony trumps all Saxifragales and holds a special spot in Hana's heart for its 262 known chemical compounds which include monoterpenoid glucosides, flavonoids, tannins, stilbenoids, triterpenoids, steroids, paeonols, and phenols. In vitro biological activities include antioxidant, antitumor, antipathogenic, immunomodulative, cardiovascular-system-protective activities and central-nervous-system activities. Paeoniaceae are dependent on simple C3 carbon fixation. They contain ellagic acid, myricetin, ethereal oils and flavones, as well as crystals of calcium oxalate. The wax tubules that are formed primarily consist of palmitone which lowers oxidative stress in inflamed nerve cells, alleviates neuropathic pain and inflammation, and manage diabetic neuropathy.
Food FormNoodlesPut on by their Asian upbringing and later expanding to other cuisines, Hana thoroughly enjoys the sensation and bite of a good noodle.
Functional GroupAcid AnhydrideUseful in Friedel-Crafts acylation, this chunky derivative of acyl halides are a little less electrophilic than acyl chrlorides and has less atom efficiency but has a lower cost in acetylation reactions, making it more accessible.
GameMystic MessengerThe mobile otome game to rule all of Tumblr from 2016 to this day, Mystic Messenger features six stunning characters (5 romanceable) to the player, who all exist in a chatroom that runs in real time respective to each run. Hana's favorite character, Saeyoung Choi (also known through the in-game alias as 707) is a red-headed charismatic programmer who is written to be as sentient as the player is in real life.
Genre (Music)Progressive Rockdescription
Hex Code#69A669Of the 16,777,216 colors that can be represented in the hexidecimal computing language, Hana's favorite is a muted, deep foresty green shade that has two instances of "69" in its code, an ode to Hana's terrible and crass humor.

PastaFettuccineHana tends to like thicker ribbons of noodles, which the humble fettuccine embodies without being too wide. A well cooked fettuccine noodle has the most excellent mouthfeel and slurpability and can serve as an excellently versatile sauce harbinger. Parpardelle is almost as good. Excellent pasta shape runner ups include: farfalle, rigatoni, and fusilli. Hana hates macaroni and orzo.
PersonAdrianHana has an astounding affinity for this extremely wise and kind soul, who adores all of the world for its inventions and wonders spanning from the exploding stars to the smallest of phytoplankton. Adrian is a gentle beauty who loves gathering knowledge from roadside garbage and the depths of the internet and sharing wisdom on personal and cultural quirks. They have six awesome cats, love chemistry and writing epics of code, and have the most melodic laugh in the world.
PhytohormoneAbscisic acid (ABA)Plants, just like any other biological organism, have many hormones that regulate their structure and function. This sesquiterpenoid plant hormone plays a large role in plant development, especially in dormancy (when the plant is active or "hibernating"), germination (when the plant begins to grow), seed development (when the plant is ready to produce offspring), and responses to biotic and abiotic stress (when the plant faces harsh or otherwise extreme conditions, such as very high or very low temperature).
